How it works
Start with the ceiling height in inches and take away the height of the topper, the few inches the stand lifts the tree, and a small gap so the topper doesn’t touch the ceiling. What’s left is the tallest tree that fits. Trees are sold by the foot, so the calculator rounds down to a size you can buy.
Width depends on the shape. A full tree is roughly two-thirds as wide as it is tall at the bottom, a slim tree a bit under half, and a pencil tree under a third.
Example
With ceiling height 8 ft, topper height 10 in, height the stand adds 4 in, space to leave at the top 6 in, tree shape: full, the answer is 6 ft 4 in .
Tips before you buy
- Measure the ceiling where the tree will stand. Sloped and vaulted ceilings vary across the room.
- Real trees are often sold a little taller than their tag, and you’ll trim the trunk. Bring a tape measure to the lot.
- Leave a foot or more of floor around the tree for presents and so it’s not brushing past furniture.
- Keep real trees away from heaters, fireplaces and vents, and keep the stand full of water.
