How it works
The calculator finds the volume (length × width × depth in feet), adds your extra percentage, and converts cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27. Weight is cubic yards × the weight per cubic yard you enter.
That weight is the number that varies most. Stone type, size and moisture all change it, so suppliers quote anywhere from about 1.2 to 1.6 tons per yard. If your supplier gives you a figure, put it in.
Example
With length 30 ft, width 4 ft, depth 3 in, weight per cubic yard 1.4 tons, extra for compaction and spillage 10%, the answer is 1.71 tons.
Tips before you buy
- Gravel compacts. Adding 10% covers settling and what gets left in the truck bed.
- Paths and patios usually take 2–3 inches of decorative gravel on top of a compacted base. Driveways need a deeper base layer.
- Lay landscape fabric first if you want fewer weeds coming up through the stone.
- Round your order up to what the supplier will deliver. Many have a minimum, and a second delivery costs more than a little extra stone.
Common questions
How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?
Typical gravel weighs about 1.4 tons (2,800 lb) per cubic yard. Crushed stone can run heavier and wet stone weighs more than dry.
How many square feet does a ton of gravel cover?
At 1.4 tons per yard, a ton of gravel is about 19 cubic feet. That covers roughly 115 square feet at 2 inches deep or 77 square feet at 3 inches.
Should I order by the ton or the cubic yard?
Order the way your supplier prices it. This calculator gives both so you can match their quote.
