Sod calculator

Measure the lawn area and choose the sod size your supplier sells. You’ll get square feet, pallets and piece count.

Pallets usually hold 400–500 sq ft. Check with your supplier.

How it works

Lawn area is length × width. The calculator adds a trimming allowance, since you lose sod cutting around beds, walks and curves. Pallets are the order amount divided by pallet coverage, rounded up. Pieces use the size of each slab or roll.

Many suppliers sell partial pallets or single pieces, so the exact pallet figure is shown too.

Example

With lawn length 40 ft, lawn width 25 ft, extra for trimming 5%, coverage per pallet 450 sq ft, piece size: 16 × 24 in slab (2.67 sq ft), the answer is 1,050 sq ft.

Tips before you buy

  • Lay sod the day it’s delivered. Rolled-up sod heats up and starts to die within a day or two in warm weather.
  • Stagger the seams like brickwork and butt pieces tightly together without stretching them.
  • Water right after laying, deeply enough that the soil underneath is wet, then keep it moist until the roots take hold.
  • For an irregular yard, split it into rectangles and add them up with the square footage calculator.

Common questions

How much does a pallet of sod cover?

It depends on the farm, but most pallets cover 400 to 500 square feet. Ask your supplier and enter their figure.

How much extra sod should I buy?

5% is usually enough for a simple rectangle. Use 10% or more for curvy beds and lots of obstacles.

How many pieces of sod are on a pallet?

With 16 × 24 inch slabs, a 450 sq ft pallet holds about 169 pieces.
