How it works
Each brick covers its face size plus a 10 mm joint on one side and the top. A UK standard brick (215 × 65 mm) takes up 225 × 75 mm, which works out to about 59 per square metre, usually rounded to 60. An Australian standard brick (230 × 76 mm) takes up 240 × 86 mm, about 48.5 per square metre. A double-skin wall needs twice as many.
Example
With wall length 5 m, wall height 1.8 m, openings (windows, doors) 0 m², brick size: uK standard (215 × 65 mm face), wall thickness: single skin (half brick), extra for breakage and cuts 5%, the answer is 560 bricks.
Tips before you buy
- Buy all your bricks from the same batch. Colour varies between production runs.
- Ask your supplier how much mortar to order for the brick and joint size you’re using.
- Garden walls over about 1 m high may need piers or a thicker wall for stability. Check local guidance.
