Christmas tree size calculator
Measure your ceiling height, then allow for the stand and the topper. You’ll get the tree height to shop for and about how wide it will be.

- 117 cm
How it works
Start with the ceiling height and take away the topper, the few centimetres the stand lifts the tree, and a small gap so the topper doesn’t touch the ceiling. What’s left is the tallest tree that fits. Trees are usually sold in 30 cm (1 ft) steps, so the calculator rounds down to one.
A full tree is roughly two-thirds as wide as it is tall at the bottom, a slim tree a bit under half, and a pencil tree under a third.
Example
With ceiling height 240 cm, topper height 25 cm, height the stand adds 10 cm, space to leave at the top 15 cm, tree shape: full, the answer is 190 cm.
Tips before you buy
- Measure the ceiling where the tree will stand. Sloped ceilings vary across the room.
- Real trees are often sold a little taller than their label, and you’ll trim the trunk. Bring a tape measure.
- Keep real trees away from radiators, fires and heaters, and keep the stand topped up with water.
