How it works

A rectangle’s area is length × width. A circle is π × radius², where the radius is half the diameter. A triangle is base × height ÷ 2, with the height measured straight up from the base.

For an L-shaped room or an irregular garden, split it into rectangles and triangles, work out each one and add them together. Measurements in centimetres convert to metres by dividing by 100: 350 cm is 3.5 m.

Example

With shape: rectangle or square, length 4 m, width 3.5 m, how many of these 1, the answer is 14 m².

Tips before you buy

  • Measure wall to wall at floor level, and round up to the nearest centimetre.
  • To convert square metres to square feet, multiply by 10.76.
  • Include alcoves and cupboards when ordering flooring, and take off large fixed units the floor won’t run under.
