How it works

Volume is length × width × depth, with every measurement in metres. Depth is usually measured in centimetres, so divide it by 100 first. One cubic metre holds 1,000 litres, which is handy when the material comes in bags labelled in litres.

Example

With length 4 m, width 3 m, depth 10 cm, how many areas this size 1, the answer is 1.2 cubic metres (m³).

Tips before you buy

  • Round your order up. Running short means a second delivery charge.
  • Loose materials settle and compact. Add about 10% for soil, gravel and mulch.
  • For bag counts and tonnes, use the material-specific calculators for mulch, gravel, soil and concrete.
