Tile calculator

Enter the area in metres, the tile size in millimetres and your grout joint. Joint width matters more than you’d think with small tiles.

How it works

Each tile effectively covers its own size plus one grout joint in each direction. The calculator divides the area by that footprint, adds your waste allowance, and rounds up.

Example

With area length 2.5 m, area width 2 m, tile width 300 mm, tile length 300 mm, grout joint 3 mm, waste 10%, tiles per box 10, the answer is 60 tiles.

Tips before you buy

  • Use 10% waste for a straight grid and 15% or more for diagonal layouts or large-format tiles.
  • Keep a few spare tiles. Matching a discontinued tile later is often impossible.
  • Dry-lay a row before fixing so you don’t end up with a thin sliver at one wall.

Common questions

How many 300 × 300 tiles per square metre?

11.1 without joints, or about 10.9 with 3 mm joints.

How many 600 × 600 tiles per square metre?

2.78 without joints, or about 2.75 with 3 mm joints.

How much extra tile should I buy?

10% for a simple floor, 15–20% for diagonal patterns or large tiles.
